Tap and Call used to be easy to explain in one breath.
Someone taps a FlairTag. You get an alert. Or a check-in. Or Wi-Fi. Or a link. Four jobs. One tag. You pick the mode in the browser. The person tapping never installs anything.
That pitch still works. The product underneath it got busier.
A shortcut. A timer. Guest requests. Delegates. Safe mode for pets. Screens for what a stranger might land on. None of those felt optional the week I shipped them. Each one answered a real "what if someone actually uses this for…" question.
The hard part wasn't inventing the next mode. It was deciding whether I could afford to keep it.
Features look free on the whiteboard
On paper, another mode is a row in a table and a new screen.
In practice it's support copy, a settings path, a failure case, an email someone might get at 10pm, and one more thing I have to remember when an OS update shifts NFC behavior.
I felt this again when I updated Maker Gully's listing this week. The homepage still talked like Tap and Call had four modes. The live product had already moved on. That wasn't a marketing typo. It was a receipt: every feature you add is a promise you also have to keep explaining.
A bigger team calls that backlog. When you're a team of one, it's just Tuesday night with a longer checklist.
The only question that matters
I used to ask myself five clever questions before shipping another mode. Most of them were a way to feel careful while still saying yes.
Now I try to ask one: does this make the existing promise clearer, or does it just make the product look busier?
Timer fits because the tag is already in someone's hand. Redirect fits because a phone already opens links. Delegates fit because alerts already go out by email. Those don't invent a second product. They stretch the same idea.
The ones I resist want their own story: a separate app, a separate pitch, a separate thing to remember at 2am. Those aren't features. Those are forks wearing feature costumes.
Longer can still be honest
I don't regret the expansion. More modes means more ways for someone to succeed. It also means more screenshots, more support paths, and more places for me to leave the marketing site behind. Both are true.
So I treat a new mode like adopting another tiny product. It joins the list of things that can confuse someone, break quietly, or need a sentence of honesty in an email.
Busier is easy. Clearer takes longer. For a studio of one, clearer is the only kind of longer that pays you back.
That's the reality of being a team of one.
