Google sent me an email about billing.
Gemini API usage in Google AI Studio was moving from postpay to prepay. Switch by October 12, 2026, buy credits, or paid features stop. Other Google Cloud services on the account stay postpay. Action required on the AI Studio billing page.
I read enough to file it under "later." Then I ignored it.
Later arrived as silence
America 250 needs Gemini for the illustrated history images. The key was still in SSM. The Lambda still started. Nothing looked "misconfigured" in my own stack.
Then generation stopped working.
Not a dramatic outage banner on my site. Just the pipeline going quiet where an image should appear. The kind of failure that makes you debug your code first, because of course you assume you broke something.
I had not broken something. I had skipped a vendor email.
The fine print I waved past
The message was clearer than I gave it credit for.
The change applied to Gemini API usage in AI Studio, not to every GCP product on the account. Postpay could keep running elsewhere. Prepay was the new gate for paid Gemini. If I did not transition and purchase credits before October 12, service would be interrupted.
That last line was not marketing. It was the outage notice, delivered early, while I still had time.
A studio of one is good at shipping features and bad at treating billing mail like production dependency. AWS SES complaints get my attention. Google AI Studio plan migrations, apparently, wait until the puzzle board goes blank.
What fixed it was not a new key
The API key was fine. The account model was not.
I had to do the boring thing the email asked for weeks earlier: open the AI Studio billing page, switch that Gemini path to prepay, and put money on the balance so paid usage could run again. Auto-reload is the grown-up follow-up so the next silent failure is not also my fault.
No heroics. No rewrite of America 250. Just catching up to a deadline I had already been given.
Treat vendor billing mail like an on-call page
If a provider says "switch by this date or paid features stop," that is a calendar item, not a newsletter.
I now want a one-line note next to every API key I depend on: which console owns billing, prepay or postpay, and when the last warning email arrived. Future me will still want to ignore it. The note makes ignoring harder.
That's the reality of being a team of one.
